3 Ways To Show Stress That You Are The Boss

As many college students say on a daily basis, “The struggle is real.”

Nothing is promised to anyone be it education-wise, work-wise or in one’s personal life. But, that doesn’t mean that you need to sit there and be buffeted by the chaos of it all.

While starting new classes and internships may be exciting and can even produce good stress, our bodies don’t know the difference between the good and bad stress. That being so, having methods to tone down stress is crucial. But, not everyone has any idea how to do so …

Not to sweat! Here are some ways to show that stress who’s boss:

1. MANAGE THAT STRESS (LITERALLY)

Get yourself a folder and explicitly label it: Stress Relief Folder. In it, keep anything that will help you to de-stress. The ‘anything’ in the folder can range from coloring pages to poems and quotes that you find relaxing or even pictures of nice moments with friends.

Your stress relief folder is your personal de-stress zone. Therefore, pack the contents as you see fit. The color of the folder itself doesn’t matter, but if a brighter color will help you find it or a more calming color such as blue would be more helpful to you, proceed accordingly. Speaking of color, you could be able to fit some coloring utensils into the folder if you don’t want to carry any along with you.

From color to contents, your stress relief folder is all about catering to your stress relief needs (sears.com)

2. VENTING

And no, I don’t mean to a friend. If your stress is becoming overwhelming at all, please seek out the proper help. Most campuses have psychological wellness programs and resources to help their students through tough times and those services are often free to students.

Seeking help from a counselor can indeed be scary and oftentimes, those closest to us try and say that worries are not real and even if they mean no harm, sometimes hurtful things about how mental health, in general, is not a real thing get said. However, anyone making those claims is wrong — very wrong.

Your mental health is indeed very real and your personal business at that. You do not need to share what you are going through mentally and emotionally with those around you if you do not feel comfortable. A certified counselor will not gossip about your mental state or criticize it. They will offer you guidance, advice, and most of all, an unbiased listening ear.

If you are unsure about your school’s counseling services in general, get some more information about it and proceed accordingly. For example, on FDU’s Florham Campus, the Counseling Center is located on the second floor of The Wellness Center building. Appointments to see a counselor can be made over the phone at (973) 443-8504 or through fax at (973) 443-8174. These services as free to all FDU registered services and are indeed, confidential.

Again, your counselor will not be screaming what you tell them from the rooftops after your counseling session.

Counselors are there to help you in any way they can (https://blog.udemy.com).

If you are feeling overwhelmed emotionally in some way, please look into your school’s counseling services. Do this for yourself, not for anyone else. It may not instantly make all of the stress in your life melt away but, it will certainly help.

3. TREAT YO’ SELF

While that ungrammatically-sound phrase does indeed, reference the wonderful series of Parks & Recreation, you do not have to take the phrase in the way that Aziz Ansari’s character, Tom Haverford and Retta’s character, Donna Meagle use it. They spend money and treat themselves to whatever they like. We college kids don’t have much and, even with part-time work and or work-study jobs, that money goes right back into our education.

When I say ‘treat yo’ self,’ I mean to relaxation.

Now, it is a given that not everyone relaxes well at all, myself included. But, what I am getting at is: take a break from the hustle and bustle of your college duties (provided you can do so of course) and do something for you. And, that ‘something’ for yourself can be anything.

Go and color a nice picture and listen to some music to chill for a little bit, watch a favorite movie that never gets old to you, call up a friend or relative you really miss. Take a moment and “treat yo’ self” to some happiness because with all the hard work you put into being a college student, you deserve it.

Take these pieces of advice and show that stress that you are in control!
