You know that whole dilemma of “I can’t get a job, because I don’t have experience, because I can’t get a job?”

It’s a vicious cycle that I’m sure you’ve experienced even when applying to an “easy” summer job where you wouldn’t think you would need experience.

After you graduate, you don’t want to fall into the vicious “no experience” cycle, so what should you do? Get an internship of course.

And how will an internship help you exactly? Let’s take a look.

1) It shows you can multitask.

Getting an internship while in school will be a big time commitment, and employers will see that. If you can pull off good grades and get good recommendations from your internship, you, my friend, are basically golden.

Employers want someone who can do multiple things at a time, and do them well, which is exactly what you would be showing them.

2) It shows you are serious about the field.

Seeing that you’ve had a good amount of time already working in the field that you want to go into after you graduate will really show employers your passion and desire to be there.

Employers want people who actually want to be there, who will put forth their best effort and be a positive attribute to the team. Getting some skills under your belt will help you stand out from other recent grads who haven’t had the internship experience that you’ve had.

3) It can help you literally land the job.

Some interns can be taken on full time if they do an excellent job and show their future potential.

You’ve already been trained, so that would be a big bonus, and they would be able to see how you work with the team and the environment of the work. This is why getting an internship in what you truly want to do is ideal, as well as being positive and friendly, and always putting forth your best effort.

Even if that specific company that you are interning for can’t take you on, they might be able to help you get an “in” somewhere else. Connections will get you far in this world.

4) It can get you an “in” with the faculty.

Professors sometimes offer internships in what they are researching, and if they accept you as a member of their team, it will help you get in with the professor, meaning an awesome letter of rec, as well as tons of connections.

Professors are actively working in the field as they teach, and will be able to get you in touch with possible employers, as well as help you with any questions you may have about the job.

Another perk is that often they offer credit for interning with them. Credit, skills and a way into your field–now that sounds awesome.

5) It serves as a resume booster.

Even if you get an internship that isn’t fully what you want to do, it will always be a resume booster.

Right when we graduate, our resumes aren’t going to be all that beefed up yet, so if you can list that you’ve done one or two internships, list all your skills, and say that you did it while taking a full load of classes, let’s just say your chances of getting hired will be substantially boosted.

6) It can give you a reality check.

Sometimes, things don’t pan out to be what we think they are. If you take an internship and really hate it, it may give you a reason to reconsider what you want to do with your life.

Or possibly, just redirect what specific aspect of your major you will want to get a job in after you graduate. On the contrary, it could also prove to you that this is the job you were meant for.

If you have a total blast with the internship, it will help you stay focused and really strive to reach your goal of your dream job.

7) You can meet people with the same interests.

Having some friends with the same interests would be a great way to bounce ideas off each other, and possibly use each other as connections. Maybe they know a Mrs. so-and-so who is looking for writers for a new movie, and maybe they can talk you up a bit.

It is also fun just talking with someone else who really gets the ins and outs of your field and what you want to do.

As you can see, getting an internship will definitely help you out in multiple ways. From gaining experience, getting a foot in the door with a future company, or simply helping boost your resume, your internship will be everything but a waste of time.

So what are you waiting for? Go and search the web for an internship that will interest you. There are plenty out there, you just have to know where to look.

Best of luck!
